I'm hoping that the Microsoft acquisition somewhat changed the calculus on this. Pathfinder did as well or a bit better, but I think it helped it was brand new series and not a sequel and it was bringing in the Pathfinder setting and ruleset to a big game for the time which which had a big following to draw on. ![]() And as other have said it was at the tail of a ton of cRPGs, the market by that point had been pretty saturated. That paired with all the negativity and incorrect framing of Deadfire as a pirate game like it was going to just be some Pirates of the Caribbean type story and setting and the discourse just wasn't great. Pillars 1 and DoS already had a rivalry going and DoS2 just dominated the discussions on its release with really only negative things being said about Pillars 1 to the point where I think that sapped a lot of interest and excitement for the game. I also think there was unfortunately a very negative element in the discourse following DoS2 release. I think the engagement just didn't translate afterwards on Fig like it did on Kickstarter. I think switching from Kickstart to Fig didn't help a ton even though they raised about the same or more money. Even with Avowed coming, it's not the same kind of experience. I desperately want to return to that world and gameplay. Maybe with MS backing they'll get the greenlight to give it another go. And it leaves you desperately wanting more to conclude the larger narrative arc. It's drop dead gorgeous, did an amazing job of expanding the lore and depth of an already rich and interesting world. ![]() Deadfire has the best RTwP combat ever made.
